Doc Visit #1 - Day Five Post Op (Tuesday)

A more significant day today!  The first post-op trip to the doc.  This was also my first time out of the house since surgery.

The car ride was a little uncomfortable.  I couldn't quite get comfortable with the boot, and I felt every bump.  We arrived, though; a short drive.  I crutched in and was led to the xray room.  This was a little tough, too, as they bent my foot to fit the different angles needed.  Didn't take long, though, and we were back to the exam room.

The doc removed the Ace bandage and some bloody gauze (yuck).  I thought he was going to remove the stitches, but he didn't.  He felt around for tenderness (which was there, of course) and looked at the xrays.  He showed them to us; a before and after.  You could see the nice titanium screw clearly.  The extra bone appeared to be gone.  He said all looked to be on the right path to healing.

Still no weight bearing though.  Not much changed.  He asked me to do some movements with Mr. Bad Heel.  Just flexion up and down, holding it in place.  He says that this will help once we do start applying weight.

The doc explained the anchor.  It is a titanium screw that attaches some "string like" things that weave in and out of the tendon; wild stuff.   Eventually the attachment won't be needed, but they just leave the screw in.

He gave us some tips for how to shower.  He said to use waterproof band aids, but only in the shower; not out.  Out of the shower they can trap moisture which could lead to infection.

We were dispatched away, to return in another week.

My mom paid a visit and while she was there we got some nice Amazon deliveries.  I received a new set of crutches as well as my knee scooter!  Minor assembly required for both.

Let me just say: the scooter is awesome.  It really helps you get around in this condition.  So much better than crutches.  Both products are helpful.  Here's the crutches, which seem to be of good quality so far:

Good handles and a nice floor grip.  Here is the scooter:

Nothing fancy; the economy model, but it works very well.

Less pain meds today.  I didn't take one until about noon.  Some of the manipulation the doc did cause some pain to flare up.
